Microsoft will lay off almost 11,000 employees this week, according to Report

Microsoft, the tech giant, is expected to join the ongoing layoff season for tech companies and will reportedly fire almost 11,000 employees this week due to the global economic slowdown.

Sky News reported that Satya Nadella’s company is “finalising plans” to be the latest technology giant in order to reduce its workforce during a global slowdown. Microsoft employs over 2,20,000 people worldwide, with 6,000 of them in the UK. The company is considering reducing its workforce by approximately 5%, which, if true, would mean that there are about 11,000 job opportunities.

The company is expected to announce layoffs Wednesday (US Time), in advance of next week’s quarterly earnings. Nadella warned that the tech industry faces two years of challenges.

CNBC interviewed him and he said that Microsoft was not immune to global changes. “The next two years will be most difficult,” Nadella said. A number of large tech companies have recently laid off their employees. Amazon has cut 18,000 jobs.

Salesforce, the cloud-based software provider, will eliminate more than 7,000 jobs.

In 2023, more than 1,600 tech workers worldwide including India are being laid off on an average daily basis. This is despite global economic meltdowns and fears of recession.

Globally, the year 2023 began on a poor note for tech workers. In the first 15 days of this month, 91 companies laid off more then 24,000 employees. This signals worse days ahead.
